My new direction on Social Media Marketing

I’ve got no idea what I’m doing

To be honest, when it comes to Social Marketing, I’ve got just enough knowledge to know that I know nothing. I’m learning a lot, and I’m experimenting like an authorpreneur, but what am I supposed to do on there? I’ve been listening to a huge quantity of podcasts, and have read a book or three about it, but I still feel like Social Media Marketing is this nebulous undefinable thing. The truth is that reach on Facebook is at an all-time low, and the ‘engagement’ metrics on Twitter is abysmal. So where am I supposed to spend my time?

On the plus side, my Klout score went up to a personal best of 32.59 today, so I’ve got that going for me, which is nice.

At least one guy spoke clearly in the midst of it all

So, after listening to Guy Kawasaki on the Marketing Profs Podcast (Marketing Smarts), I’m heading in a new direction. It’s sort of like I was doing before, but now it’s with a purpose.

What sort of worked for me on Social Media Marketing

Previously, I thought I would be curating content that I found useful, that may be useful for all you beautiful people out there to build an audience base to start with. I’d also pop a personal thought with a hashtag here and there to make it my own. Then, down the line somewhere, I’ll learn how to use Social Marketing eventually and start doing mysterious social media marketing stuff to sell a lot of books.

But that’s not right, is it?

Turns out, what I was doing “just to start out with” is the way forward. I’ll be reposting content that I found useful and post my own thoughts here and there. I’ll be reading Guy’s book just to make sure I’m not missing anything, there will probably be a review on that to report what I’ve learned. But now, I feel a lot less stressed about it. I get to do what I’ve been getting used to, and you’ll be hearing about the great stuff I found online. I’m thinking win-win again with my Social Media Marketing. The point is to get people to know, like and trust you, right? Why did I forget that?

Over to you!
